When to think about ledge
fishing
Ledge Fishing Hmmmm…. Summertime with current,
Nothing beats a bend in the river channel when there is current. You hear
the bass pros complain about no current all the time. Current brings the
bass fresh water and an easy meal. With no current the fish are harder to
pinpoint and may suspend and only feed in spurts. Current on a ledge
means the fish are open to eating all the time.
A ledge does not
mean you have to fish in the middle of the lake either; Often
the best ledge is one that swings up again a bank. My best baits for the
ledge are a 10 or 12 inch Culprit worm in Red Shad with ½ weight Texas rigged, a deep diving Daiwa crankbait
in Chartreuse with blue back or Tennessee Shad color, or ½ ounce jig in black
or white.
I prefer fishing
shallower ledges (break at 6-8 feet) if possible. Often
closer to the river section of a lake you will find
this depth and more current. At a shallower depth you don’t have to worry
about poor water quality often found in deeper water.
